I started writing these essays and poems after my husband of 57 years died in an accident. It rather astonished me that most of our friendships and socializing with married couples, that had lasted over 50 years, faded away after the funeral. Do older married couples fear death of a friend’s spouse may be contagious? I knew from academic work and my study of aging that this new "friendless" predicament was common for widows, although not for widowers. I consider myself fortunate that I began daily journal writing during my doctoral program. Much of what I thought and wrote about in journal pages eventually grew into this book you are holding. Another helpful habit was the fact that both my husband and I were news junkies. So between reflective writing, the New York Times at my door each morning, and eating supper with the evening news on television, the difficult first year of living alone was quietly embraced. So dear readers, I share the path that I walked to a fulfilling new life!
