Beschreibung
A scarce collection of dialogues anonymously written by William Gilpin, discussing how a clergyman should spend his time outside of looking after his parishioners. The third edition of this scarce work.Three dialogues by William Gilpin, purportedly written in the 1686 by a 'Josiah Frampton'. Gilpin proposed that his dialogues were conducted between Frampton and Dean Stillingfleet of St. Paul's, though all the work came from Gilpin's own pen.The dialogues are witty and entertaining, discussing the proper ways in which a clergyman should spend his time outside of his pastoral duties, with hobbies and activies such as gardening, shooting, going to the theatre, and horse riding.First published in 1796, Gilpin wrote this work after his travels in search of the picturesque. At the time when he wrote these dialogues he was Vicar of Boldre in the New Forest, a position he held from 1777 until his death in 1804. In a full calf binding. Externally, generally smart, though the leather is a little rubbed to the spine and extremities. Minor bumping to the extremities. A very small amount of loss to the head and tail of the spine. Crack to the tail of the front joint. A few small marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with some scattered spots. Good. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 869P24
