On the 3rd of November of the same year a day was to be dedicated to Tibetan Art, the first to be organized by the University "Sapienza" of Rome. For this reason we have decided to dedicate the proceedings of the event to Prof. Petech's memory - they will be gathered here in gratitude and with deep affection. The conference's goal was to introduce the attending students to one of the richest branches of Tibetan civilization. The purpose of this initiative was not only didactic but also to inform about the recent research of Italian scholars in this fascinating sector of Tibetology. The idea, clearly stated in the title of the conference, was to show how the artistic expression of Tibetan civilization continues its course and is able to renew itself in our age without negating its past, but instead by drawing from its inspiration and contents. Nowadays, cultural and geographical Tibet no longer coincides with political Tibet: with the arrival of many exiled Tibetans in many countries of the world its voice has been amplified. But even in the past the influence of Tibetan civilization in the field of art never remained behind its borders but instead manifested itself in the entire Himalayan plateau and exchanged with the countries it came in contact with». (From the Preface, by Elena De Rossi Filibeck) «Il Professor Luciano Petech è scomparso il 29 settembre 2010, lasciando un grande vuoto nel mondo dell'insegnamento e della ricerca nella disciplina accademica di studi asiatici. Il 3 novembre dello stesso anno fu dedicata all'arte tibetana una giornata di studio, la prima organizzata dall'Università degli Studi "La Sapienza" di Roma. Per questo motivo abbiamo deciso di offrire gli Atti della manifestazione - qui riuniti con gratitudine e con profondo affetto - alla memoria del Professor Petech. L'obiettivo della conferenza era introdurre gli studenti in uno dei settori più ricchi della civiltà tibetana. Lo scopo di questa iniziativa è stato però non solo didattico ma anche quello di fornire informazioni riguardo alla ricerca recente degli studiosi italiani in questo affascinante settore degli studi di tibetologia. L'idea, chiaramente espressa nel titolo del convegno, è stata quella di mostrare come l'espressione artistica della civiltà tibetana continua il suo corso ed è in grado di rinnovarsi in questa nostra epoca senza negare il suo passato, ma traendo da esso ispirazione e contenuti. Oggi il Tibet culturale e geografico non coincide più con il Tibet politico: con l'arrivo di molti tibetani in esilio in molti paesi del mondo la sua voce è stata amplificata. Ma anche nel passato l'influenza della civiltà tibetana nel campo dell'arte non è mai rimasta dentro ai suoi confini; si è invece manifestata in tutta l'area dell'Himalaya ed ha avuto scambi con i paesi con cui è venuta in contatto».
