Dirk Bogarde returned to London in the late 1980s, having lived in France for 20 years, and at that point was asked by the Daily Telegraph to review a clutch of books. There followed eight years of exceptional writings that are collected for the first time in this book: pieces on fellow actors and directors like Charlotte Rampling and Joseph Losey, reminiscences of the French Riviera, a famous satirical piece on London dinner parties, reviews of books about the Holocaust, and so on. The result is a marvellously entertaining book that throws new light on the life, thoughts and character of one of Britain's most admired writers and actors.
Sir Dirk Bogarde has written six novels, most recently Closing Ranks, and seven volumes of autobiography. He was made an honorary Doctor of Letters at St Andrews University in 1985 and a Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government in 1990.
