An engaging history of timekeeping by astronomer and educator Paul M. Chamberlain. Written for the general reader, the work traces humanity's efforts to measure time, from ancient sundials and water clocks through the development of mechanical clocks, escapements, chronometers, and modern precision timekeeping. Numerous illustrations and technical diagrams help explain the evolution of horological science and engineering.
Published during the early twentieth century, this volume occupies an interesting place between popular science and horological scholarship. It remains attractive to collectors of clocks and watches, historians of science and technology, and readers interested in the cultural and scientific development of time measurement. The clear explanations and period illustrations make it both a useful reference and an enjoyable historical survey.
