Inhaltsangabe: Nessy Marks, a holocaust survivor, moves next door to thirteen-year-old Debbie Robbins, who has Tourette Syndrome. As Nessy becomes friendly with the Robbins family, she relates her life before, during and after the Holocaust. In turn, Debbie confides her difficult Tourette history to Nessy, as well as her desire and fear to audition for her school's production of "The Diary of Anne Frank." Nessy encourages and coaches her, and helps her suppress her tics. Soon after the play, Debbie invites Nessy to go with the cast to the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. Nessy declines - fearful that it will dredge up horrible memories. Debbie convinces Nessy to go. At the museum, Nessy relives her ghetto experiences, her brave escape, and her existence afterward. Additional memories in Not My Time include Nazi soldiers herding her family into the ghetto, where they lived in deplorable conditions; enduring the selection process; the degrading treatment by the Nazis; witnessing senseless murders of family and friends; escaping from the camp; getting a job at an orphanage; later working in a labor camp; her reunion with her parents and ultimately moving to America. Although they represent two different generations, Nessy and Debbie have a lot in common - interests, suppressed memories, and fears. In the end, they help each other overcome their fears and come to terms with concerns that haunt them.
