The fourth edition of Samuel Lewis' extensive dictionary of the topography of England, including the additional atlas volume, which is illustrated profusely with folding maps The fourth edition of this work.In five volumes, including the scarce to see atlas volume.This work is a concise history of England, focussing on the topography and various towns and cities in the country, offering a condensed form and impartial description of each place.The England volumes are arranged alphabetically, showing each village, parish, and town, in relation to their location to other towns and counties, its principal landowners, the diocese, as well as offering a description of the location as they existed in the early nineteenth century.Volumes I to IV are illustrated with the occasional in-text engraving.The atlas volume is illustrated with thirteen folding maps, and twenty-nine maps.Collated, the atlas volume is bound without two plates.Volume I contains A-C, Volume II D-K, Volume III L-R, Volume IV S-Z.Three appendices to the rear of Volume IV, including one detailing the boundaries of the old and new boroughs in England.Written by Samuel Lewis. Lewis was a publisher, best known for his topographical dictionaries and maps. Rebound in a modern cloth binding, with new endpapers. Externally, smart, with some light marks to the boards and spines. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spines. Spine labels are a little rubbed, small chip to the spine label of Volume II. Spots to the fore edges. Front hinge of Volumes I and II are starting but firm. Hinges of Volumes III and IV are starting but firm. Torn bookseller's label to the front paste down to Volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with scattered spots. Some pages of text unopened to the top edge.
