Bouchette's dictionary describes Lower Canadian place names from Abagusquash to Yamaska, including rivers, counties, districts, canals, islands, lakes, villages, and more. Location is given, along with translations of Native words, statistics, population, industries, and history. Montreal itself is described, divided into parishes, but so are such off the beaten track locales as the Musk Rat River. Former owner of this book was Dr. Louis Laberge, director of the Montreal health bureau in the late 19th century. His "bureau" was entrusted with the tasks of maintaining sanitary conditions in the streets and in private and public buildings, inspecting food and disinfecting contaminated areas.
