Beschreibung
Travel album of a young man on tour in Asia from 1917 to 1918. The of the compiler of this album is unknown (but he is pictured at least once). Album measures 15" x 11". There are 294 silver gelatin prints; most are color tinted. Almost all of the photos measure 5 ½" x 3 ¼" with about 35 photos measuring 3" x 4" or smaller. Photos are glued in. About a third of the album is annotated in white ink (some annotations are faded and impossible to read). Overall good. The black pebbled album covers have moderate wear and sunning; two thirds of the album leaves are detached from the binding; album leaves that are detached have light to moderate chipping along the edges; photos have light silvering. This album begins in Canada; the young man who put together this album travels to China, Vietnam, Singapore, Sri Lanka and India, and returns via Sri Lanka, Singapore, the Philippines and Japan. The album begins on the Canadian Pacific Railroad in October 1917 and likely ends in Japan in May 1918. Specific locations visited include Woosung (Wosong) , China; Hanoy (Hanoi) , Vietnam; Colombo, Kandy, Ceylon and Talaimannar, Sri Lanka; Madras (Chennai) , Calcutta and Mozufferpore, India. This colorful album depicts many scenery shots of rice and tea fields, mountains, jungles and gardens; railroad, ship, automobile and ferry scenes; scenes of small towns and villages; city and temple architecture. The fashions across Asia are represented: from the dhoti and kurta of men in Visakhapatnam, India to foreign colonial attire and women dressed in colorful kimonos. Highlights include all the modes of transportation, a snake charmer, a celebration for the 70th anniversary of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company, pretty carp streamers (possibly Koinobori, celebrating Children's Day in Japan) , and a great photo of "Miss Chickering and Mrs Blake looking at this album" (a photo of this album, how cool! ). With gorgeous scenery views, nice detail of city and village architecture, evidence of colonial rule in architecture and clothing, good images of ocean liners, railroads, rickshaws and other transportation methods, sweet scenes of local and visiting children, this album captures what eastern Asia would have been like for the early 20th century tourist.
