In-12, [4]-XXVIII-424-[3]-[1bl]-93-[2]p. Edition originale de la traduction de Chaillou de Lisy, faite sur la sixième édition italienne, seconde édition française après la traduction d?André Morellet (1766) faite sur la troisième édition. La traduction de Morellet, bien qu?acceptée par Beccaria, avait été fortement critiquée car Morellet avait aussi fait un travail de réécriture. Chaillou a, lui, respecté l?ordre des chapitres et est donc plus fidèle. L?ouvrage est aussi enrichi du Jugement d?un célèbre professeur et d?une Réponse à un écrit intitulé notes et observations sur le livre des délits et des peines. La seconde partie est un commentaire sur le traité (93p) de Voltaire qui avait été publié anonymement en 1766. Pleine veau marbré, dos à nerfs orné, tranches marbrées. [Commentaire sur le livre des délits et des peines, par Voltaire], demi-basane fauve, dos lisse orné de filets, tortillons et fleurons dorés, pièce de titre brique, tranches citron (rel. du début du XIXe siècle). Légère mouillure claire infra-paginale sur une importante partie de l'ouvrage. L'ouvrage fut d'abord publié en italien en 1764, et connut rapidement plusieurs rééditions avec des réaménagements successifs. Son rôle dans l'évolution de la philosophie du droit et l'évolution du droit pénal en Europe n'est plus à souligner.La première traduction française (de l'abbé Morellet) était parue dès 1766, même année que le Commentaire sur le livre des délits et des peines, anonymement commis par Voltaire et publié à l'adresse de Genève, Cramer.Il s'agit ici de la première édition publiée par Chaillou de Lisy.Quérard I, 249.
