Die zehn Beiträge zu diesem Sammelband basieren auf Vorträgen, die auf dem Symposium „Transmission and Tradition – The Meaning and the Role of 'Fragments' in Indian Philosophy“ gehalten wurden, das als österreichisch-japanische Kooperation an der Shinshu-Universität in Matsumoto, Japan, stattfand. Ausgehend von der stark ausgeprägten Intertextualität vormoderner indischer Gelehrtenkulturen befassen sich die Beiträge eingehend mit philologischen und historischen Problemen, die durch „Fragmente” aufgeworfen werden, also durch Textpassagen, die in ihrer Gesamtheit verloren gegangene Werke repräsentieren oder vermitteln. Sie problematisieren auch den Begriff „Fragment” als solchen. Der Band spannt einen Bogen über verschiedene religiös-philosophische Traditionen, darunter Buddhismus, Nyāya und Mīmāṃsā, und entwickelt dabei auch methodologische Richtlinien für die systematische Sammlung, Einordnung und Präsentation von Fragmenten.
