1751. Sixth edition, with additions and imporvements. vii, [i], 141pp. plus a 7 page index. Henry Bracken (1697-1764), was a physician and writer on farriery. Born at Lancaster, he received much honour in his native town, and was twice elected mayor. He published several books on horses, written in a rough, unpolished style, but abounding in such sterling sense as to cause him to be placed by John Lawrence at the head of all veterinary writers, ancient or modern. His Traveller's Pocket-Farrier was first published in 1742 and soon went through several editions, and was designed for the use of those who relied on horses for their trade of travelled widely throughout the country. The book is bound in contemporary full leather boards with five raised and a later leather label on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some expected signs of its age. The leather on the boards is scuffed with some staining and the corners are lightly bumped with a little damage and loss to the leather around the corner tips. There is also a little loss to the leather at the top of the spine and a thin split to the leather on the top of the front spine edge and a split of about 1" on the top of the rear spine edge. The contents are tight and secure although the front and rear free endpapers have been removed. There is no half-title page but the numbering suggests that the book was not published with one. The pages are clean apart from a few small marks and the fixed endpapers and first and last few pages, including the title page, have brown staining around the edges where colour has been taken from the leather binding the book. A small piece is missinf from the top corner of the title page and there is a small label from a private library on the front fixed endpaper. There is no inscription.
