Inhaltsangabe: Rafael Trujillo is a prototype of the Latin American dictator. Not only did he have a taste for beautiful women, he had an even larger craving for power. Trujillo wanted to control the Spanish-speaking world in the western hemisphere.

Vom Autor: This is a novel I've been thinking about doing for a very long time, probably for more than 10 years when I first started writing them in 1988. I didn't try to make it my first, second or even the third. It was my fourth. When you become so attached to a place, one has to think carefully before getting started on such an awesome task.

I got my first look at San Juan from the deck of a cargo ship, the view shown here as cover art, 'San Juan from the Sea.' That view of the city was shared with me by wife wife, Connie, and two children, our five-year-old daughter, Rene, and our three-year-old son, Lane. It was the end of a journey that started in Kansas City, Missouri, and the beginning of another, into the world of the Caribbean and Latin America. I don't think any of us were the same after that electrically charged moment.

Since that May day in 1962 when our ship docked in San Juan's harbor, I feel like I've been privileged to stand on the deck of the San Juan, the capital of this U.S. Caribbean Commonweath, and get two clear and unusual views of the Western Hemisphere. One is a look into the soul of where I had traveled from, the United States. The other is a look into the soul of where I had traveled to, the Caribbean and Latin America. For such an opportunity, I will always be eternally grateful to Puerto Rico.

The writing of this novel, San Juan, is but one small way to say thanks to a people and to an island that have given so generously to me and my family.
