Inhaltsangabe: Poems evoking the Spanish Civil War and its aftermath, the harshness of life in Barcelona under Franco, and the grief at the death of a beloved handicapped daughter.

From Booklist: For American readers to whom Margarit is being introduced in English translation, the melancholy Catalan poet may seem surprisingly familiar. Many of his poems evoke the smoky, sinister beauty of the late-night jazz clubs he seems to have frequented in Barcelona as a young man. They insist, as Charlie Parker's music does, on a brutally honest sexuality: "I pity you if, in the eyes of your love, / you have never seen the smile of a whore," Margarit writes in "Smiling," while in "Loverman" he celebrates the way Parker allowed his sax to wander "following the shadow / of a woman who dances, her eyes closed / and in nobody's arms in the dark." This noirish mood continues in homages to Raymond Chandler, Oscar Wilde (on his way to prison), wet streets, dark alleyways, and the like. And it deepens even further in selections from Joana, a series of elegies following the death of his beloved daughter. Death, grief, loneliness—not a happy poet, this Margarit, but an accomplished singer of songs in a decidedly minor key. Nance, Kevin

Buchbeschreibung Bloodaxe Books Ltd. Paperback. Buchzustand: new. BRAND NEW, Tugs in the Fog: Selected Poems, Joan Margarit, Anna Crowe, Joan Margarit is one of Spain's major modern writers. Born in 1938, he worked as an architect and first published his work in Spanish, but for the past three decades has become known for his mastery of the Catalan language. The melancholy and candour of his poetry show his affinity with Thomas Hardy, whose work he has translated. In poems evoking the Spanish Civil War and its aftermath, the harshness of life in Barcelona under Franco, and grief at the death of a beloved handicapped daughter, Margarit reminds us that it is not death we have to understand but life. His poetry confronts the worst that life can throw at us, yet what lingers in the mind is its warmth and humanity. Buchnummer des Verkäufers B9781852247515
