First-person narratives of the 12 survivors of the attack by Fidel Castro's band of revolutionaries against the government of Fulgencio Batista, a battle that launched a movement's armed resistance. This was in 1956. This copy is in completely readable condition though it does have some underlining and margin notes, all done by the writer John Nichols. He used the book as a background source for a script on Che Guevara, a movie that was never produced. The jacket is in a mylar sleeve and is missing paper in one place on the cover. A rare book. hardcover. 1st edition. New York. 1968. Lyle Stuart. 1st Edition. Very Good in Dustjacket That Is Water Stained. The Personal Reports Of The Who Survived To Launch A Revolution In Cuba. Translated from the Spanish by Albert B. Teichner. 190 pages. hardcover. Cover photo by Osvaldo Salas. keywords: Cuba Latin America Caribbean History. FROM THE PUBLISHER - On December 2, 1956, eighty-two men led by Fidel Castro landed in Oriente Province, Cuba, to launch a revolution against the brutal dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. All but twelve were killed. This is the story of the twelve who survived - first-person narratives of the quixotic struggle that changed the course of history. The accounts included here were recorded at war's end, and they afford an unforgettable picture of day-by-day rigors of guerrilla warfare. One sees a conservative Fidel Castro admonishing his famished men: 'Serve the soup, but keep the chickens simmering and save them for tomorrow.' And observes how Raoul Castro intervened to settle a dispute over guard duty: 'No arguing, comrades. If anybody doesn't want to mount guard, let him tell me. I'll take his place.' And witnesses an amusing 'public relations' stunt to impress famed NEW YORK TIMES reporter Herbert Matthews with the size and strength of Castro's ragtag army in the Sierra Maestra mountains. And hears a realistic rebel remind his fellows of their plight: 'After the fight at El Infierno we were almost wiped out three times. Just two days ago it was only a question of hours whether we'd fall into a trap. And here we are now, practically surrounded and with only Fidel Castro's principal aide in war and peace. (Her hardships as a guerrilla fighter were all the greater because she was terrified of mice.) HaydEe Santamaria, one of the two women who engaged in the attack on Moncada Barracks on the 26th of July, 1953, a veteran of the Sierra and city warfare. (She suffered the cruelest of tortures by Batista's henchmen.) Vilma Espin, co-director of the attack on Santiago in 1956, combatant on the Second Front, aide to Raoul Castro, whoiii she married at war's end. (She was piqued because Raoul and his coinpadres considered it unsafe for her to join theni on the march on Havana.) Those who despise Castro and those who admire Castro will value the insights provided by this unique documentary of the Cuban Revolution and the forces that made the Cuban government today - a revelation of the bonds that have somehow weathered every crisis from the loss of all but twelve to the Bay of Pigs invasion. Perhaps Hayd6e Santamaria says it best: 'Each time that I see Fidel, that I talk to him or see him on television, I think about the others, all those who died and those who are living, and I think of Fidel, the Fidel that we know, that Fidel who is still the same as ever.' Haydee Santamaria will never forget those who died: It was her brother's eyes and her fiance's testicles that Batista's men brought her in prison to prove their prowess as torturers. inventory #14436 Very Good in Dustjacket That Is Water Stained.
