Beschreibung
large square 4to. individual broadsides. A collection of 21 mock drawings of 6 pt Corona Boldface 2 by the famous Linotype Company in London, England. Of those characters, 7 are capitals (R, T, U, V, W, and X), and 14 are lower case (b, d, e, h, i, j, k, m, p, q, r, u, v, and x). All are in near fine condition. The original font drawings were used to create the font molds (at the end of the type matrix). The perfect large drawing then needed to be miniaturized using a pentograph machine. Each font consisted of upper case lower case numbers and special symbols and ligatures. The Linotype Company was formed by Joseph Lawrence, a publisher, and Stilson Hutchins, in 1889 after Hutchins brought three prototypes of Ottmar Mergenthaler's Linotype machine over to England (History of the Linotype Company, Frank Romano). Joseph Lawrence was the proprietor of the Railway Herald in London when he saw the 'Blower' machine at work in the office of the New York Tribune. He ended up joining the board of the British Linotype Company and became the first chair in 1894. New construction started on a factory in Broadheath in 1897, turned the city into a booming business metropolis, which helped sustain the area in financial difficulties in the early quarter of the 20th century. After merging with the Machinery Trust in 1903 (thus forming The Linotype and Machinery, Ltd., or L&M, Ltd.), the company became one of the largest linotype companies in Europe. The firm made typesetting machines for the national newspaper industry. After his venture in the printing business, Lawrence became the Sheriff of the City of London in 1901, then a Conservative MP for Monmouth Boroughs in 1901 to 1906. It was during his time at the Monmouth Boroughs that he secured a revision of the patent laws. He passed away in 1919. Silson Hutchins worked at the Washington Post during the mid 1880s. It was during this time that he became an important shareholder in the National Typographic Company and the Mergenthaler Printing Company. Empowered by these companies to act as an agent, he helped sell patents across the globe, including England. In 1889, he helped broker a deal between Lawrence, thus starting the company. Hutchins also brokered a deal for the Linotype Company to purchase shares of the National Typographic Company in 1897. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 130053
