Large quarter bound book with burgundy cloth covers. Fourth edition, first under this title. What is impressive about this book is its scope from the Scott family history, the sailing ship era, the development of the steamship, the impact of two world wars down to its portrayal of practical engineering and plans across time of the shipbuilding yard and the staff offices, canteens etc. All of which is underpinned by 137 b/w plates; plus maps, charts and diagrams. Condition (external): there is fading on the cloth of the upper board plus some looseness and rubbing in places. However, the main condition-related effect is on the lower board where some of the cloth, while not detached, has become quite loose and very faded/stained in places. (If this book were a ship, while seaworthy, it would probably be confined to harbour for a little servicing). Tight binding. Condition (internally): some mild to moderate tanning with occasional foxing, but the many illustrations and text are largely unimpacted. Ffep has an ink dedication, dated 17th June 1968. pp. xix, 279/4to. There is a mix of paper types used with the text printed on laid paper, the photographic illustrations etc on standard book paper.
