Artikelbeschreibung vom Verkäufer

A CHARLESTON CULINARY RECORD PRESERVING TWO CENTURIES OF SOUTHERN COOKING TRADITIONS A landmark regional cookbook celebrating the food traditions of Charleston, South Carolina, from colonial-era kitchens through the early twentieth century. Compiled by Blanche S. Rhett, edited by Lettie Gay, with an introduction and historical notes by Helen Woodward, the volume presents recipes gathered from Charleston families alongside historical commentary, illustrations, and accounts of local customs. More than a collection of recipes, Two Hundred Years of Charleston Cooking documents a culinary landscape shaped by Lowcountry ingredients, rice culture, seafood traditions, plantation-era influences, and generations of household practice. Recipes are accompanied by historical sketches that place individual dishes within the broader story of Charleston life. This copy bears evidence of genuine use and ownership, including a contemporary 1930 presentation inscription and a clipped recipe preserved among the blank pages. A handsome example of a historically important Southern cookbook in an attractive decorative binding. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Bound in original red patterned cloth with repeating gilt floral/star motifs. Spine with contrasting dark cloth label stamped in gilt. Decorative endpapers. Beveled boards. Illustrated with 12 black-and-white photographs, including images of Charleston streets, historic scenes, and food preparation. Includes index. Octavo, approximately 9 inches tall. 289 pages with an index. Second Printing, November 1930. CONDITION: Very Good. The bindings are tight and square. Text is clean; light, even age-toning. Moderate shelf handling wear consistent with careful use. The decorative cloth binding remains attractive, with rubbing and light wear at the extremities. Minor edge wear and handling marks are present, but the binding retains its structural integrity. A contemporary ownership inscription appears on the front blank dated December 1930. Additional evidence of use includes a preserved recipe clipping inserted among the blank pages, reflecting the practical life of the book as a household cookbook rather than simply a reference volume. CULINARY SIGNIFICANCE: BEYOND THE RECIPE - A RECORD OF CHARLESTON'S FOOD TRADITIONS. Two Hundred Years of Charleston Cooking belongs to an important generation of regional cookbooks that sought not merely to preserve recipes, but to capture the character of a place. Blanche S. Rhett and her collaborators approached Charleston cuisine as a living tradition - shaped by local ingredients, household customs, seasonal practices, and generations of cooks who carried these traditions forward. A TASTE OF CHARLESTON'S PAST. The recipes reflect the distinctive culinary landscape of the Lowcountry, where rice, seafood, game, poultry, and locally available produce formed the foundation of Charleston dining. Historical notes and illustrations expand the volume beyond a practical cookbook, transforming it into a record of domestic life, regional identity, and the customs surrounding the Southern table. LOWCOUNTRY CUISINE AS CULTURAL RECORD. Published during a period of renewed interest in American regional traditions, the work preserves a culinary world undergoing change. Its combination of recipes, historical commentary, and visual documentation makes it an important contribution to the literature of Southern foodways and American culinary history. THE KITCHEN AS HISTORY - CHARLESTON'S CULINARY MEMORY. The volume was intended as a working household companion, not simply a decorative record of Charleston cooking. This copy provides evidence of that purpose through a contemporary ownership inscription and a preserved recipe clipping among the blank pages, reflecting the continuing use and personal connection that regional cookbooks often acquire over time. SUBJECTS: Charleston South Carolina, Lowcountry cuisine, Southern cooking, regional cookbooks, American food history, culinary traditions, h.
