He seeks the assistance of the Corporation in this endeavour. He outlines his reasons for his proposal. He is very critical of the English. He has a prerequisite of the painting that the artist treats the crucial moment at Fontenoy after the Irish Brigade has slit the English column into two parts. " The painting shall represent Sergeant Wheelock of Bulkelay's Regiment seizing the banner of the Coldstream Guards and the Coward English Soldiers shall be shown with theirs backs turned in flight." He suggests a competition between artists of Irish blood to select the painting and outlines how much should be awarded for the paintings that finish 1st to 4th. He also asks that specific people be chosen on the Commitee to oversee the project. O'Sullivan, was a native of San Francisco. In 1902 he donated a marble plaque commemorating the courage of the Irish Brigade in the Battle of Fontenoy. It was affixed to the wall of the Fontenoy Cemetery. On August 25, 1907, a Celtic cross, offered by a subscription of three Irish committees of London, Dublin and New York, was inaugurated close to the church of Fontenoy. Work of the Irish architect Anthony Scott, this Irish memorial commemorates the memory of the Irish brigade which distinguished itself during the battle of Fontenoy.…
