Oban size, 25.5 x 36 cm., very good, two small old worm holes [mended], a few tiny fox spots,overall nicely done, good color, excellent registry, artist signed & censor date sealed, original 1803, excellent period reprint. *** *** *** . . . WORK BY THE GREAT MASTER . . A lovely Utamaro color print. This work shows a young woman combing an older woman's long flowing raven hair, while she reads a letter. She is semi-nude and bares her breasts in a loosely fitting summer Kimono tied with a silk sash in the front, in a casual manner. The girl who grooms her is also wears a loosely fitted Kimono open at the front, indicating a hot, sultry summer season. Its likely that theolder woman just washed her hair in an effort to cool herself. At the lower right corner is a part of a rolled or scroll letter, torn at one end. This is probably a love-letter. Utamaro has signed this at the left margin, below which is the cens- or or Kiwame seal.
