William Prynne (1600-1669) was an English lawyer, author, polemicist, and political figure. He was a prominent Puritan opponent of the church policy of the Archbishop of Canterbury, William Laud. His views on church polity were presbyterian, but he became known in the 1640s as an Erastian, arguing for overall state control of religious matters. He published over 200 books and pamphlets, and is best known for his 'Histriomastix: The Player's Scourge, or Actor's Tragedy, a critique of professional theatre and actors that was first published in 1632. 'The Unbishoping of Timothy and Titus' is one of his lesser known works. The book has been rebacked and recased in later (probably mid to late 19th century) full leather boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some scuffing and staining to the leather on the boards and some loss of colour on about 1/2" of part of the top edge of the front board. The corners are rubbed with a little damage and loss to the leather. There is also some scuffing to the spine and about 1/8" to 1/4" of the leather is missing from both spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with some expected age browning and a few marks and small stains from finger smudges, etc., mostly near the start of the book. There is a small amount of insect nibbling to the margin of the first 50 pages.There is some scattered light foxing although the first and last few pages, including the title page, are more heavily affected. The title page also has some soiling and a few ink stains and a name and date (1766) has been written on it about 1 1/2" from the top edge. This copy has been in a college library but the only such indications appear to be two labels, both overlaid with a 'withdrawn' stamp, on the front fixed endpaper. There may be a few other minor faults that have been missed, but overall, this is a clean and sound copy of a scarce 360 year old book. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers gVIRel01
