Italo Svevo, whom Alberto Moravia has called one of the three greatest Italian writers of the last hundred years, was born in Trieste in 1861 when it was still part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. By the choice of his pen-name (Ettore Schmitz was his name by birth) he symbolized his mixed Italian and middle-European origin and cultural tradition. His first two novels, one at least of which is now regarded as a masterpiece, attracted no attention when first published. But ten years later James Joyce read them with enthusiasm and persuaded Svevo to take up his pen again. It was with the publication of his third novel, Confessions of Zeno, that Svevo's qualities began to be widely acclaimed. In this story of a well-to-do man, his courtship and marriage, his mistress, his business dealings with his brother-in-law, and his psycho-analysis, Svevo combines an ironic method which has been compared with Musil's with subtle characterisation and a lively sense of narrative and form.
