Political scientist have collected an enormous quantity of original data, yet in the statistical analysis of these data, they have relied largely on methods borrowed from other disciplines and designed for other purposes. In this book, King demonstrates the utility of the likelihood theory of inference as a unifying approach to statistical modeling for political research. King further provides readers with the means to create new statistical models tailored to their data and theoretical problems. In Part 1, King introduces the fundamentals of his approach and describes the basic likelihood model, using a unified notation in an easily accessible way. In Part II, he applies the likelihood theory to a large variety of more sophisticated statistical models, some new to political science, and others derived here for the first time. This book should stimulate and centralize methodological debate in political science and facilitate the emergence of a new emphasis on methodology in the field.
