A Universal Military Dictionary, Or A Copious Explanation of the Technical Terms &c. Used in the Equipment, Machinery, Movements and Military Operations of an Army By Cap. George Smith, Inspector of the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich, Printed for J. Millan, near Whitehall, London, 1779, title vignette, sixteen plates, all but two of them folding, folding table, unpaginated, tree calf leather, 11.25 x 9 , 4to. In good condition. Spine handsomely rebacked with five raised bands, double ruled in gilt. Attractive tree calf leather boards with minor wear to extremities. Minor scuffing to boards with patch of desiccation at bottom right corner of front board. Some light cracking at joint edges at original leather. Presents well. Original end papers free of markings minus a few stray ink splatters on the second end page. Dark dampness staining at gutter of title. Dampness staining persists throughout, at times affecting text. Signature of Ralph Gore Ensign, 33rd Regiment on dedication leaf dated 1780. Light fingersoiling at the margins with minor instances of foxing throughout. Overall bright and clean. Folding plates in rear are in good working order. Some are repaired with non-archival tape. A few small tears at the folds, nothing major. Appears that some plates may be cut out in the rear, but that is unconfirmed. The only other listing available states that this would have had sixteen plates. Binding is tight and intact. Please see photos. Incredibly scarce with amazing American Revolutionary provenance! Our copy was owned by subscriber Ralph Gore Ensign of the 33rd Regiment dated 1780. In 1780 the 33rd Regiment was engaged in the Siege of Charleston. We can say Enisgn possibly carried this during the British Army s successful Siege of Charleston in 1780 during the American Revolution. Ensign was part of The Duke of Wellington s Regiment, the 33rd or First Yorkshire West Riding Regiment name changed in 1782. By May 11th of 1780, the American General Benjamin Lincoln began to negotiate terms of surrender. The following day on the 12th, Lincoln, along with 7,000 American soldiers, surrendered to the British forces under the command of Lieutenant-General Henry Clinton. This was a unanimous victory for the British. This book includes an incredible array of plates depicting Encampments of the Artillery, rifle parts, canon anatomy, military regiments, drills, and mathematical templates for the use of canons.
