A very interesting early nineteenth-century work on ornamental planting gardening, with chapters on judicious planting, the structure and growth of trees, approved methods for preparing soil, and more.Published by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, a London-based society formed in the early nineteenth century whose intention was to publish educational treatises on a wide range of topics so that individuals who could not obtain formal education could educate themselves.The personal copy of Maurice Paget Gillson, the former Vicar of Bristol All Saints Vicarage, Clifton in the early twentieth century; his signature is present to the front free-endpaper.Also containing the ink inscription of another previous owner to the front pastedown: 'J.M Paget to R.H. Levant, 24th May 1833'. In full brown buckram binding with the original paper label adhered to the spine. Externally, some minor shelf wear to the boards, and cloth is lifting to the spine. Previous owners' ink and pencil inscriptions to the front pastedown and front free-endpaper. Internally, binding generally firm.
