Inhaltsangabe: Why do we try to use military force to solve our political problems? And why, when our forces win the military battles does this still fail to solve those problems? It is because the force lacks utility. From Iraq to the Balkans, and from Afghanistan to Chechneya, over the past fifteen years there has been a steady stream of military interventions that have not delivered on their promise for peace, or even political resolution. The Utility of Force explains this anomaly at the heart of our current international system.
About the Author: General Sir Rupert Smith is one of the most senior international practitioners in the use of force. In his forty year career in the British Army he commanded the UK Armoured Division in the 1990-91 Gulf War, was GOC Northern Ireland, commanded the UN forces in Bosnia in 1995, and served as Deputy Commander of NATO. All of this experience informs his book. He retired in 2002.

It is an as new copy in an as new dust. There are no marks or inscriptions of any kind. The text block is square and tight with no sign of age toning. The black boards are pristine as is the gilt lettering to the spine. The unclipped dust wrapper is complete with no tears or marks. The colours are vibrant. The original price of £25 remains. The dust wrapper is now protected by a removable, acid free acetate sleeve. The book is from the unsold stock of a (now closed) high street book shop. As such it is unread and has not seen the light of day until now. The author is a soldier who has served in senior positions in a number of recent conflicts, most notably Iraq and Bosnia. He provides a unique and fascinating insight into the view of morality of these wars held by senior command. He addresses a number of difficult questions including “why is force being used increasingly as a solution to political problems” and “why is the mass murder of innocent civilians seen by some as a legitimate tool of force”. An erudite and worthy book that succeeds in addressing the futility as well as the utility of force. The images you see are high resolution scans of the actual book you will receive. It will be dispatched via the Royal Mail in protective packaging. We do not charge postage to buyers within the UK. Those from outside the UK are asked to contact us before purchasing.
