Full burgundy morocco, boards with triple fillet gilt borders enclosing foliate and volute corner pieces, spines with raised bands, lettered and richly gilt-decorated in compartments. Francis Bedford 1799-1883 is considered one of the finest nineteenth century British binders. Beautifully illustrated throughout with a frontispiece and a total of 204 engraved vignettes. Third Heyne edition, improved, both regarding the text and the illustrations (Ed. emendata et aucta). The vignettes are in the classical (Italianate or Grecian style) by Fiorello and engraved by Geyser.
