Beschreibung
(50) + 407 pp. 29 x 23 cm. Engraved titlepage vignette, twelve unnumbered engraved folding plates, six engraved headpieces, five tailpieces, and six decorative engraved initials by J. Pine, after J. Grison. A large copy with wide margins. The boards have been professionally, but lightly, restored, the rear board having had some old shallow cuts made on it. Corners are a little tender. New front and rear endpapers. There is an old ink owner's inscription on the title page, "From the Rev. John Dubardieu to his son Capt. Dubardieu Rl Artillery" with, in a different hand, underneath "Frances Dubardieu decec. Royal Hanoverian Engineers". John Dubardieu was Rector of Annahilt, Co. Down, and the author of "A Statistical Survey of Co. Down" (1802) and "A Statistical Survey of Co Antrim (1812). His fourth son Capt. Robert Rawdon Hastings Dubardieu, c.1784-1861, was serving as a Captain in the Royal Hanoverian Engineers in Germany by 1836. On his return to Ireland he was employed by the Newry Navigation Company. He later became County Surveyor for Sligo (1834-36) and Louth (1836-40). (Ref. Dictionary of Irish Architects). The book was intended for the general, albeit intelligent, reader. It was the first book to be wholly printed in a Caslon Roman font. The elegant head- and tail-pieces depict scientific scenes. There is a lengthy and distinguished list of subscribers. Contemporatry calf binding, six panelled spine with raised bands, and original spine label. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 16052
