Inhaltsangabe: Dust jacket notes: "Women artists of China have long been overshadowed in Western literature by their better-known male counterparts. This volume brings together some eighty paintings by forty-three Chinese women artists whose lives collectively span six centuries. Based on an exhibition organized by the Indianapolis Museum of Art, this selection of paintings from thirty-seven collections around the world provides an overview of an important aspect of the history of Chinese art. Records are scarce for women painters within the tradition of Chinese art before the Yuan dynasty (1279-1368). In that period, wives and daughters of the gentry began to produce art in their homes for themselves and for their friends. They painted what they knew best, their gardens, homes, and collections. In time, not only the gentry but also courtesans, nuns, artisans, and even members of the imperial family gained recognition for their artistic accomplishments. The term Jade Terrace became associated with women during the sixth century, when a Chinese scholar assembled an anthology of poems that contained eight centuries of love poetry. coupled with earlier associations of bygone days and palatial realms where immortals gathered, Jade Terrace became synonymous with the best of womanhood. During the Qing dynasty (1644-1912), there appeared a volume devoted to women calligraphers and another to women painters, both incorporating this abstract realm in their titles. It is in tribute to these important texts that Views from Jade Terrace has been assembled...." Hardcover quarto, 232 pages, 202 illustrations, 95 in color.
