Three very scarce seventeenth and early eighteenth century works bound in one.This volume includes;'A Vindication of K. Charles the Martyr', the third edition, published in 1711. One page of adverts to the rear.This is the best known work of Thomas Wagstaffe, in which he defends the late Charles I, and exploring the authorship of 'Eikon Basilike', an apologetic royalist work often purported to be by to the executed King. This treatise endeavoured to proved that Charles was in fact the author of 'Eikon Basilike'. The first edition of this work was published in 1693.'Reason and Judgement, or, Special Remarques of the Life of the Renowned Dr. Sanderson, Late Lord Bishop of Lincoln'. Published in 1663. Register runs as B-L4, M3.This work looks at Robert Sanderson, a theologian and casuist, a concise biography on the Bishop of Lincoln. This touching work was published only months after his death.'A Letter Out of Suffolk to a Friend in London', dated 1694. Register runs as [3], B-34.This is a lesser known work by Thomas Wagstaffe, in which he discusses the illness and death of Archbishop Sancroft, who had died the year previously. Sancroft was one of the Seven Bishops improsed in 1688 for libel against King James II. Wagstaffe at one time treated Sancroft as a physician, and spent some time with him in Suffolk before his death.Prior owner's ink inscriptions to the recto of the front endpaper, noting the works bound in this volume. In a quarter calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, paper to the boards is discoloured and worn, with some loss, mostly to the extremities and to the front board. Spine is a little faded. Small cracks to the spine, and a little rubbing and a couple of light spots to the leather. Hinges are starting but firm. Prior owner's ink inscriptions to the recto of the front endpaper, noting the works bound in this volume. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean, with the occasional spot and handling mark. Tide mark to the pages of 'A Letter Out of Suffolk', and to the rear paste down, and to the final few pages of 'Vindication'. Final leaf of text and rear endpaper are working loose. Puncture mark to the gutter of 'Vindication'. 'Reason and Judgement' is bound without the title page and gathering A. Good. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 887P47
