This collection is comprised of volumes I-IV and VI-XII (missing volume V). The Cornhill magazine was a monthly literary journal containing articles on a diverse range of subjects, as well as poems and serialised novels. Although issues continued to be published until 1975, the magazine reached the peak of its popularity under the editorship of William Makepeace Thackeray between 1860 and 1870. This collection contains novels such as Anthony Trollope's Framley Personage, Armadale by Wilkie Collins, William Thackeray's Denis Duval, and the first appearance of George Eliot's popular story, Romola. As well as Thackeray's Roudabout papers, the volumes also contain poetry by Charlotte Bronte, Alfred Tennyson, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Each volume is illustrated with between 12 and 24 plates, and volumes I, III, IV, and VI contain folding maps or folding plates.
