Author of "The United States of America." No date. Circa 1895. ***Very good in brown cloth-covered boards with gilt titles, and attractive gilt floral device and gilt rules to spine and front board. Edges and corners of boards slightly rubbed. Head and tail of spine slightly rubbed. Spine slightly darkened. Contemporaneous owner's name and date in sepia fountain ink to front free endpaper: "G.R. Lunn Boston 1896" and underneath in the same handwriting "To John Lunn from Grandpa 1948" (handed down from grandfather to grandson in the same family). Slight off-setting to front and rear endpapers. Slight spine slant. Spine tight. No foxing. ***355 pages plus 16-page publisher's adverts to rear. 188 x 128mm. ***'The next day I was to be sold. There was to be a public sale of slaves, and several besides myself were to be disposed of. I was fettered and handcuffed, and taken to market. The rest of the merchandise was already collected; but it was some time before the sale began, and I occupied the interval in looking about me. Several of the groups attracted my particular attention. ***The first that caught my eye was an old man, whose head was completely white, and a pretty little girl, his granddaughter, as he told me, about ten or twelve years old. Both the old man and the little girl had iron collars about their necks, which were connected by a heavy chain. One would have imagined that the old age of the man and the youth of the girl, would have made such savage precautions unnecessary. But their master, so far as I could learn, had resolved to sell them in a fit of passion, and the chains, perhaps, were intended more for punishment than security.' (Ch. XIII, page 62-63). ***Richard Hildreth was a journalist, historian and author. He wrote "The White Slave" in 1834, and the novel was first published in 1836, also known as the "Memoir of Archy Moore". The novel was first published in the UK in 1852 before slavery was abolished in America in 1865. The novel is about a mixed-race slave in America, and is interesting from a historical perspective, giving insight into how slave owners and traders operated. Richard Hildreth also opposed the annexation of Texas in a series of articles he wrote in 1837 for "The Atlas". Also in 1837 his book "Banks, Banking, and Paper Currencies" encouraged the establishment of the free banking system in America. In 1840 he published "Despotism in America" opposing slavery. In 1849 he published the first three volumes of his six-volume "History of the United States," the last volume being published in 1852. The first three volumes of this history cover the period 1492-1789, the second three volumes 1789-1821. His detailed, and considered highly accurate history was carefully researched using primary sources. ***This edition of "The White Slave" was published circa 1895. A decorative nineteenth-century antiquarian title in nice collectable condition.
