Large 8vo. (24 cm.) unpaged [96p.]. Illustrated with charming full color illustrations on every page by Janet Laura Scott. Green paper decorated in color with illustrations like those in the book. Endpapers illustrated in full color by Janet Laura Scott. Wear to extremities with corners and top and bottom of spine rubbed through, spine slightly darkened, fingernail sized abraded area along front gutter, rubbing to edges in several places, charming Valentine's Day gift inscription on front free endpaper, else very good to near fine with no other internal markings. No dust jacket. This is one of the Volland "Nature Children Books", per the rear cover. This copy is from the collection of Frank Fultz and the inscription is to his wife and is dated 1938. Janet Laura Scott (1888-1968) was an illustrator and landscape artist. She was known for her work with the PF Volland publishing company and later, as a prominent regional watercolorist in Maine. Over the course of her career, she illustrated greeting cards, calendars, baby books, several issues of Child Life magazine, and Child Craft articles, some of which continued to be in print in multiple editions. She designed Raggedy Ann dolls for the PF Volland, who published Johnny Gruelle, and illustrated the Bobbsey Twins books. In 1926, she met the artist Carroll Thayer Berry when working for a Chicago advertising agency. During the Depression they moved back to Berry s native New England, where they bought a house in Wiscasset, Maine. Their home became a meeting place for craftsmen and artists of the region.
