A standard string-bound exercise book with strong, faded marbled-effect red covers and canvas spine. A contemporary label has the name E. Trotter and date 6.7.22 (although entries in the book start from 1920 and end in 1929). The book is bulging with material. It includes over 300 photographs, 100 pieces of text, 50 cartoons and 60 match reprts from principle Ladies' Champion, Suzanne Lenglen, plus reports by Lili de Alvarez and miscellaneous other related items, all cut from newspapers or magazines of the day. Leading figures include Lacoste, Borotra, Suzanne Lenglen, Lili de Alvarez, Helen Wills and Zenzo Shimidzu among a host of others. The cartoons of Tom Webster are particularly good, as they bring together a gift for lifelike caricature with a great sense of humour based on knowledge of the sport. A quote from his drawing dated in ink by the compiler from the Daily Mail, 27.6.24: "Wimbledon Thursday. The best laugh up anybody's sleeve today was the fact that NORMAN BROOKES, nearly 50 years of age and a racket that Grimsby people use for shrimping beat - A dahing young American who had almost fallen out of the cradle in order to play Brookes (F. T. HUNTER )" Entries are orderly and dated carefully, although the earliest (1920) begin in the middle pages and continue to 1924/25 on the rear board. The sequence continues then from the front, through to 1929, although by 1927 the entries become more sparse, and by 1929 are loosely inserted, but not pasted in. The whole thing is concluded with a folded front page from the Daily Mail (browned, but bright and clear) with the heading "Socialist Prime Minister in Power To-Day", having also as Latest News: VESUVIUS ERUPTION WARNING. But one suspects the principle reason for the compiler saving this page is another column : "STOCKINGS OR NO STOCKINGS. To-Day's Problem for Wimbledon. Decision must be left to players. SPECIAL DAILY MAIL NEWS." This is the work of a true enthusiast for the game, carefully compiled and redolent with the spirit of the time - as well as being, now, a unique record.
