He was the most famous and popular preacher of his day, and his sermons, recorded in shorthand by one of his congregation, have come down to us more or less verbatim. An aristocrat and a scholar, he had the gift (like that of our own Latimer a century later) of appealing by his candour, clarity and humour as effectively to the simple as to the learned; and his colloquial manner equally evokes the people he addressed and those who figured in his anecdotes or parables. The result is a series of portraits, painted by the spoken word, that illuminate the religious, domestic, commercial and political scene of early fifteenth century Tuscany. By liberal and judicious quotation incorporated in a flowing narrative, Iris Origo has re~created this miniature world of a singularly attractive saint~the world of purse~proud merchants, honest tradesmen and usurers; of women vain, gossipy, flirtatious; of the oppressed and the oppressors; of the Church and the monastery, the plague~stricken and the impoverished; the world, too, of art and letters at the dawn of the Renaissance. San Bernardino was in it and of it, and he described its people with irony and pity and the impassioned fervour of a great reformer. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 9021903
