Beschreibung
This is a curious but interesting carved block of wood, dating from WW1, measuring 16 x 20 x 1 cm and hand carved on one side "Royal Engineers" with their insignia (image 1). On the reverse (image 2): we can read: "A bit of "Spare Time". Wal. 8.8.18. Then "Bea."" then illegible (image 2). ['Trench art' is a term used to describe objects made from the debris and by-products of modern warfare. Trench Art is usually associated with the First World War, as here, although similar items have been produced in other conflicts too.
