The classic story of a chimney-boy's adventures in a magical underwater world. When Tom, an ill-treated chimney-boy, is suspected of stealing from the grand house of Harthover Place, he runs away and only stops running when he reaches a sparkling brook. Eager to clean the soot off himself, he jumps into the water - and is transformed into a water-baby. In the fairy-ruled kingdom, where no-one comes to any harm, he finds himself meeting some incredible creatures as he travels to the Other-end-of-Nowhere on a wonderful voyage of discovery.

CHARLES KINGSLEY, 1819-75, was educated at Magdalene College, Cambridge. He became curate, and subsequently rector, of Eversley in Hampshire. Kingsley was particularly involved in the social reform movements, and Christian Socialism. Branded as a radical Kingsley worked outside the mainstream of society until his patriotic stance on the Crimean War brought him royal favour.
