All the Way Back Home (Paperback)

Shaye Fox is a wreck. Once a respected dentist with a loving wife, he's now a drunk living alone in a too-big cabin on a California mountainside. He’s lost his license, his marriage, and nearly everything that made him human.

Then, on a rain-slicked highway, he nearly runs over a massive, blood-soaked white dog.

The dog shouldn’t have survived. Someone sliced him open to smuggle drugs, leaving him to die. But the dog, War Daddy (as Shaye comes to know him), has the soul of a fighter. With shaking hands and fading hope, Shaye patches him up in his old dental office, saving the dog’s life even as he wonders if his own is worth saving.

But War Daddy isn’t just any stray. He’s a stolen service dog from East Sahara, taken from his blind owner and shipped halfway around the world. The more Shaye learns about him, the clearer it becomes: this dog doesn’t belong here. And neither, it seems, does Shaye.

Faced with his own self-destruction, Shaye makes a choice no one expects—not even himself. He’ll cross oceans, deserts, and his own demons to take War Daddy home. Because sometimes saving someone else is the only way to save yourself.

All the Way Back Home is a funny, raw, and deeply moving adventure about second chances, loyalty, and the lengths one broken man will go for the best friend he’s ever had.

All the Way Back Home is an epic adventure novel, perfect for fans of the Arabian Nights, Louis L'Amour, and Jack London.

WHAT READERS ARE SAYING:

★★★★★ “Louis L’Amour returns! I’ve missed the prose and atmosphere of Louis L’Amour’s writing for a long time. Here J.R. Rain has captured the feel and romance of the mystical pull of the wild that Louis L’Amour created. I highly recommend this book to all those that love the mysteries of the desert and want to find that magical place that only a good book can take you to. Thank you, J.R. Rain! This was a special experience.” —Amazon review

★★★★★ “This is an amazing book of epiphanies, cultural differences, and loyalties. Shaye is a disgraced dentist, a man without love and little left to live for. He feels nothing; that is, until he nearly runs over a dog. His natural caring saves this animal used for a horrible purpose. When the dog, War Daddy, is traced to his origins, Shaye sets out on an epic (I know, I usually hate using that overused word; but this time, it’s true) journey of trust to get War Daddy back home to someone who needs him more than himself. Along the way, Shaye finds out more about himself than most people do in a lifetime. There are treacheries, dishonesties, and dangers. There is also loyalty, courage, and love. I enjoyed this book for the adventure, cultures, and some surprises. This is the first time I have read this author, J.R. Rain. I found the mystical aspect in this book to be unusual, surprising in relation to the rest of it, but enjoyable. The particular breed of dog, though, is for real and their instincts amazing.” —Amazon review

★★★★★ “Best J.R. Rain book yet. I have always liked J.R. Rain’s Samantha Moon stories. That’s why I chose to buy this book. I could not put it down. I think it’s one of the best books he’s ever written. I love the characters and the plot. I honestly wish you would write a sequel. It was that good.” —Amazon review

★★★★★ “An excellent story of redemption. This is a very well crafted story with a Lord Jim type of theme—but with a much better structure and ending. In my opinion this book is well worth the read.” —Amazon review

★★★★★ “Great book! I loved this book. At this point, I think this is the best book this author has ever written, and I love all of his books. This book taps all of your emotions. I was so involved in this story that I hated to see it end. Just excellent writing. I can’t think of enough to say about this book. Just, well done!” —Amazon review
