Western Mysticism. Dieser Artikel ist nicht verfügbar.Western Mysticism

"Western Mysticism" is a profound exploration of the contemplative tradition as defined by three of the most influential figures in the history of the Western Church: Saint Augustine, Saint Gregory the Great, and Saint Bernard of Clairvaux. In this scholarly work, Edward Cuthbert Butler provides an exhaustive analysis of the teachings and personal experiences of these saints, presenting what he identifies as the native, pre-scholastic form of Western spiritual life.

The book focuses on the "Neglected Chapters in the History of Religion," offering a clear and accessible guide to the nature of contemplation and the contemplative life. By stripping away later medieval accretions and complex philosophical systems, Butler reveals a mysticism that is deeply rooted in the scriptures and practical experience. He highlights how Augustine's intellectual search for God, Gregory's focus on the balance between action and contemplation, and Bernard's affective devotion to the Word together constitute a cohesive tradition of spiritual practice. This work is an essential resource for students of theology, church history, and anyone interested in the psychological and theological foundations of the soul's journey toward the Divine. It remains a definitive study of the origins of Western spirituality and its enduring relevance to the search for inner peace.
