Beschreibung:

A first edition hardback in Fine condition. The protected jacket has no damage. Robin Jacques was one of the greatest illustrators Britain ever produced. That thoroughly nice man had such a modest exterior I fear he did himself little good. I was lucky enough to meet Jacques twice; once at the private view of the V&A show about Radio Times illustrators, and once in The Royal Free Hospital, where I was granted a long interview with him. I was struck by his genius - because that word is appropriate - when I was a teenager. Every week we I would search the RT for the drawings. Most were worth a look, many were superb, others were timeless and of permanent value. Of these, the ones that seemed consistently brilliant were credited to Robin Jacques. During my interview with him I found out he was musically knowledgeable. Given his Prom drawings, and the wonderful Flying Dutchman cover for RT, I am not surprised such fine and subtle work came from a deep knowledge and love. He also did some great literary illustrations, Shakespeare in particular. I have a very tatty copy of Motif & Image which featured his early work. It is indistinguishable from his later work in technique, although his people are often shown in highly theatrical poses; dramatic, beautiful, and accurate. Robin Jacques deserves a retrospective at the Tate. His work is more imaginative, and more profound, than the tossers who parade their tat so shamelessly. The book was a collaboration with Ted Roethke's sister, Judith St. John, and displays his style. Language: eng Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng 0.0.
