VERY RARE gilded & embossed illustrated hardcover book. "Wild Life in Sunny Lands" By W. Gordon Stables, M.D., R.N. Illustrator: Alfred Pearse. Undated, believed to be circa early 1900s, published by The Religious Tract Society, London. 8vo, 20.5 cm x 14.3 cm x 4.3 cm, Red cloth-covered boards, Gilt embossed lettering & colour decoration on spine and front cover, Seven monochrome illustrations on plates, no dust-jacket. 326 pages. Weight: 502 Grams. CONTENTS ARE MOSTLY LIKE NEW!!! However, spine is damaged: Bumped & frayed either end with damage to binding & cloth there, cloth is split & fraying alongside covers both sides, some discolouration, tears & scratches, gilt a little dull, decoration scuffed. There are several cracks forming throughout, pages look uneven. Cover is discoloured, bumped & slightly marked, gilt bright, decoration scuffed, edge wear. Corners are bumped & frayed with boards exposed. Top edge darkened, may have been gilt. Ink annotation & remnants of pencil markings on 1st endpaper. Crease in front pastedown showing through to 1st few pages. Some pages & plates (very few) have tiny edge bumps/nicks/tears, and/or tiny corner folds/creases, and/or light handling creases. Page 127/128 has come loose at head & is frayed there. Light age tanning & occasional foxing throughout. VERY RARE ITEM, EXCELLENT CONDITION INSIDE!!! Full title: "Wild Life in Sunny Lands - A Romance of Butterfly Hunting". This is one of Gordon Stables most hard to find titles. Another great story for boys, full of exciting & exotic adventures at sea & on land, with 7 beautiful monochrome illustrations by Alfred Pearse on plates.
