(A new look at an old controversy)

In military training we often hear the term, WAR GAMES. Its probably a bad metaphor, but what ancient warlord started the game of war? History, both ancient and modern, is riddled with an endless succession of tyrants who think it their privilege to rule over society as trophies on display. As a result, many nations have not experienced any real peace for a very long time. America, until recently, has avoided the worst kinds of bloodshed on our shores. But all that changed on Sept 11, 2001. On this date we became involved in an entirely different kind of war. At first a few thought this was a war against America by those of the Muslim faith. The apparent transparency of an enemy who has no regard for innocent human life has forced U.S. citizens into a sudden fear of military threats from outside our country. Of course, we now know the man behind these terrorist attacks was Osama bin Laden. But knowing who ordered these actions just raises other questions. It is an annoying fact of history that numerous small uprisings, similar to the Al Qaeda have evolved from within nearly every religious system which in time gave birth to larger, more aggressive political and religious revolutions. Thus we question; are there fundamental theosophical evil forces beyond the human experience that inspires the most radical of these movements?

Everyone would like to see the violence stop. And so we ask; who benefits from war anyway? For some supposedly, unknown reason humanity seems to be addicted to it. Think about it, the mentality of war is everywhere. It’s in ancient literature, it’s in modern literature and it’s in the Bible. In modern times it’s entertainment. We see it in the movies, on television and it has even been designed into computer games. There really does seem to be a factor that exploits the idea of combat in almost every phase of life. Perhaps we can never completely avoid using the term, but notice that the idiom of war appears in politics, in business, in fighting disease, and even in the pursuit of life itself.

Within the last few decades, an increasing number of professional sociologists have been making the claim that history consistently demonstrates that all wars are religious wars. A few go even farther. They conclude that war is an inevitable result of religion, and they explain that religion itself, (any variety) is evil and must be replaced with a kind of social morality. It seems that these highly respected teachers have forgotten one simple fact. Millenniums of wars between nations have never been solved by removing God from the picture.

So! If, as many claim, God is in control; why do some nations seem to be locked in a continuous cycle of war that neither side wants? This is a different kind of story about the causes of war. Actually the beginnings of war is a historical mystery. War is one of the oldest traits of mankind and historians are certain that war preceded written history.

From the beginning of time, gods fighting gods was the theme of every ideology. Could this be the spark that somewhere in history, ignited man’s very first war, escalating out of control as one nation fought another over whose God created the world? In this context, wars were almost always religious wars. Since nearly every ancient and modern religion claims there is only one God, theirs. we are forced to rephrase the question thus; which side of war does this One God support? Thus the book title; WILL THE REAL GOD PLEASE STAND UP. The nucleus for the story was formed when my wife and I became acquainted with a Jewish lady who said that her father had told her that the Bible is about as relevant as Aesops’ fables. In this book, the theater where most of the drama in the conspiracy is acted out is a pre-Christian, pagan/Jewish contest
