Scan shows part of the outer covers. Scarce item. From the personal collection of Pittsburgh fine arts dealer, Charles A. Wunderly. "The two chromo-lithographs which enclose this chart represent the two carved ivory covers of a Psalter which was, apparently, executed for Melissenda, eldest daughter of Baldwin and wife to Foulques, Count of Anjou, who succeeded Baldwin as King of Jerusalem in 1131. It is a splendid specimen of the decorative skill of 12th century Byzantine art. One side represents the cardinal virtues [-]. The six medallions present scenes from the life of David [-]. The other side represents the six acts of mercy, performed by a regal person [-]. The scenes are described in the Latin of the Vulgate [-]. The carver who is an imperfect Latinist, has apparently carved his own name at the top, Herodius. Both covers are studded with rubies ans turquoises. This fine specimen of a dying art is intended as a contrast and an introduction to the new life of the Renaissance, and above all to the vital and vitalising art of Florence. M.J.R.".
