This is a 1923 printing of the first Scribner edition to feature the Nancy Barnhardt Illustrations, in 1922. The book is bound in blue cloth with title and author stamped in gilt on the front cover. Illustration of "Ratty",leisurely reading under a tree, is stamped in black on the front cover. The head of spine was crushed at one time leaving the binding shaken and the hinges cracked exposing the webbing, but the text block is sound. Corners are rolled. Top edges, tinted red ,are now faded. Endpapers , illustrated in blue-tone, depict a picnic scene by the river with Otter, Moley, Ratty and Mr Badger. Frontis with tissue guard intact. There are light smudges on margins infrequently through the book but the the pages are generally lightly age-toned, clean and unmarked.
