Inhaltsangabe: Best-selling author Erica Jong here turns her attention to the fantastical and factual world of witchcraft. She explores the figure of the witch both as historical reality and as archetype - as Halloween hag and full-breasted seductress, as a lingering vestige of a primeval religion and a projection of fear of the unknown. Now, more than a decade after its original publication, Jong has added a new introduction to Witches, emphasizing the relevance and continued popularity of this beguiling topic.

About the Author: Erica Jong is the author of the novels Fear of Flying, Shylock's Daughter, Inventing Memory, and Sappho's Leap. She has also written six volumes of poetry and a number of nonfiction works, including the memoir Fear of Fifty. Joseph A. Smith, a painter and sculptor, is a professor of fine arts at Pratt Institute in New York City.

Erica Jong, whose recent bestselling novel of the 18th century, Fanny, revealed a new aspect of her magical writing talents, turns her attention to the factual and fantastical world of witchcraft. She explores the figure of the witch both as historical reality and as archetype ~ as Halloween hag and full~breasted seductress ~ as a lingering vestige of a primeval religion and a projection of fear of the unknown. In prose and poetry, all wonderfully enhanced by the illustrations of Joseph A. Smith, Erica Jong treats the witch as a survivor of the age of sorcery, as a scapegoat for male~dominated church~state politics, as a remarkable natural healer, and as a hexer without peer. Tales of torture and triumph, a gallery of witches' familiars, real recipes for love potions and for flying lotions, and formulas for spells and incantations make this rich serio~comic excursion vibrate with mystery and delight. Buchbeschreibung Harry N Abrams Inc, New York, 1981. Hard Back. Buchzustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. Smith, Joseph A. (illustrator). First Edition. 176 Pages. Illustrated in full color throughout. This Witch's Brew of a book has everything. Erica Jong, whose recent best-selling novel of the 18th century, Fanny, revealed a new aspect of her magical writing talents, turns her attention to the factual and fantastical world of witchcraft. She explores the figure of the witch both as historical reality and as archetype -- as Halloween hag and full-breasted seductress -- as a lingering vestige of a primeval religion and a projection of fear of the unknown. In prose and poetry, all wonderfully enhanced by the illustrations of Joseph A. Smith, Erica Jong treats the witch as a survivor of the age of socrcery, as a scapegoat for male-dominated church-state politics, as a remarkable natural healer, and as a hexer without peer. Tales of torture and triumph, a gallery of witches' familiars, real recipes for love potions and for flying lotions, and formulas for spells and incantations make this rich serio-comic excursion vibrate with mystery and delight. Contents in 39 Chapters: The Witch, Some Light on the Subject of Witchcraft, The Word Witchcraft, From Mother Goddess to Witch, The White Goddess and the Witch, From Paganism to Christianity, Witchcraft vs. Witch-craze, On the Subject of Torture, Some Questions for witches, Witches and Heretics, Satanism & Witchcraft, Muddled Mythologies, Becoming a Witch, Theories of Witchcraft, What Does a Witch Look Like, Witch Lore, The Witch's Equipment The Witch's Costume, Some Witch Rituals, Sexual Union with the Devil, Witches and Impotence, Puppets or Poppets, Love Poppets, Love Spells & Why We Need Them, The Witches' Year, The Witches' Organization, The Sabbat, Favorite Haunts, Witches & Flight, Witches & Weather, The Witches' Herbs, Poisons & Cures, A Deadly Herbal in Verse, The Gathering of Herbs, Flying Ointments Some Recipes, The Witch and the Fairy, Some Legendary Witches, Famous Witches in History, and In Conclusion The Communal Myth of the Witch. Plus Selected Bibliography. Who were the witches? Heretics or healers, members of a psychedelic cult, worshipers of pagan gods, or merely women who were not afraid to fly. This is not a quick course in witchcraft, or a detail of the horrors of the Inquisition, nor does the book propound one historian's theory over another. But the author tries to show, through peoms and paintings, through prose and pencil drawings, how the figure of the witch can teach us about our most secret selves. If you have a secret self --- this book is for you. Size: 9" X 12". Buchnummer des Verkäufers 10569
