The first edition was published an unillustrated triple-decker on 22 December 1884 in a printing of 500 copies. This edition was published by J. and R. Maxwell, in a one-volume edition. 5 x 7½" pp. iv + 332. Fair in red cloth with beveled edges to boards, with gilt stamped lettering on front and spine. Edges untrimmed. Boards grubby and stained. ffep and frontispiece missing so the first extant page is the title page which has a loss about ¾" square. Firm and tight; the contents are clean and bright with no stains, foxing, stamps or labels. No dustwrapper. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 000747
