Beschreibung
Special edition, signed by Robert Novak, who wrote the foreword. The author, Whittaker Chambers, was a witness in the trial of Alger Hiss. Chambers (1901-1961) was a writer and editor. He had joined the Communist Party as a youth and became a spy for the Soviet Union. He later broke with the Soviet Union, then worked for Time magazine. In 1948 Whittaker accused Hiss of also spying for the Soviet Union in the 1930s. The statute of limitations had run out, and eventually Hiss could only be tried for perjury, and Whittaker testified at the Hiss trial (called the trial of the century). This is Whittaker's memoir. Robert Novak (1931-2009) was a syndicated columnist, journalist and author on political topics. This special edition, published by Regnery, is bound in full leather with elaborate gilt detailing on the cover and spine, four raised bands on the spine, silk moire endpapers. Photographic illustrations. 5.5x8.5 x4 inches thick, 1224 pages, gilt tipped on the three edges. Fine, like new, condition. Uncommon in this edition. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 001543
