Beschreibung
First edition. Rebound in quarter leather and marbled boards, new endpapers. According to the preface, Hall was the first woman to make the entire journey from the Cape to Cairo. "In 1904 when South Africa was still uppermost in all minds, I decided to turn my steps I that direction. Since then I have traversed the whole length of the African continent, from the Cape to Cairo; but I propose to touch very slightly only on a few of the most noteworthy places north and south, describing in more detail my travels in that much less known part of Central Africa -- the Africa of Livingstone and Stanley -- which lies between Zambesi and the Nile." Robinson (p. 15) describes her route: "Her route took her up the Shire river to Port Herald (Nsanje), by rail and machila (a hammock slung on a pole) to Lake Nyasa, along the lake aboard a 'traveling theological college' to Karonga, then on foot or by machila again to Lake Tanganyika. She crossed the water (roughly the length of England) aby steamer and 'mission dugout', trekked on to Lake Victoria Nyanza and, after a brief detour east to Nairobi by rail and rickshaw, reached Entebbe, Lake Albert, and Gondokoro. By now she was on the relatively familiar route down the Nile to Khartoum and Cairo - more of less home." With 64 photographic illustrations and two folding maps, which are in good condition. Hardcover, bound in quarter leather with four raised bands, gilt titles in red leather bands and gilt decorations and date on the spine. 424 pages. Overall, very good and sound. Light foxing, a few light smudges in the margins. A very handsome volume. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 000930
