Endpapers renewed., This is a rare large paper copy.First edition of what is disputed to be either the best or the worst of early modern Chaucer scholarship. This book marks the last in a 200 year tradition of printing folio editions of Chaucer, and the first in the tradition of printing Chaucer in roman type rather than in blackletter. Due to Urry?s access to manuscripts (unavailable for over a century), his systematic consultation with a network of aristocrats and educated gentry, and his detailed descriptions of manuscript sources, critics have generally kept him in the notes of many current editions., Size : Folio, Contains frontis portrait of John Urry and also portrait of Geoffrey Chaucer, title page contains a vignette of Chaucer?s tomb, many engraved illustrations, elaborate head and tail pieces, and elaborate initials. , References : Bateson I 208; Graesse II 127; Maggs Bros Dec 1929 383, P. frontis, title, blank (2), portrait, (32), preface (13), contents (2), (3), 1-626, 1-81, eratta.
