An attractively bound collection of the works of Jonathan Swift, illustrated with numerous plates throughout. In a nice contemporary diced calf binding. ETSC citation number T140266. Each volume is an octavo. A nicely bound collection of the works of Jonathan Swift. Swift was a satirist, essayist, poet, and political pamphleteer, writing during the late seventeenth century to the mid eighteenth century. He is best known for his works 'Gulliver's Travels', 'A Tale of a Tub', and 'A Modest Proposal', all of which are included in this set. He was known for his ironic writing style, and 'Swiftian' was a term coined after his satire tone. Volume I, illustrated with eight plates. Volume II, illustrated with ten plates. Volume V, illustrated with four plates. Volume VI, illustrated with four plates. Volumes I, and X-XII were published in 1755. Volume II-IX were published in 1754. Volumes XIII and XIV were published in 1764. Volumes XV and XVI were published in 1765. 'Letters', Volume I, published in 1766. 'Letters', Volume II, published in 1766. 'Letters', Volume III, published in 1766. Volumes XIII to XVI were published was a supplement to the original twelve volumes, with an additional volume XVII being published later in 1775. 'Letters' were a collection of six volumes published from 1766 to 1768. The title page of Volume I states that it is in three volumes, the three volumes present here, but three additional volumes were published in 1768. Page 85-6, leaf G8, of Volume III cancelled, but reprinted, provided with a footnote on page [86]. As called for by the ESTC. In Volume IV, signatures [T]-[U]9 (pages [267] - 298) have been inserted after leaf S5. As called for by the ESTC. Volume VIII, signatures 2A6-2A8, 2B-2D are apparently cancelled, the verso of signature 2A5 is numbered 306-414. As called for by the ESTC. Bookplate to the front pastedowns, 'G. E. Maunsell'. In a full diced calf binding. Externally, generally smart. Some light rubbing to the spines. Some light marks to the boards. Front joint of Volume IV cracked, resulting in the front hinge starting. Crack to the tail of the front joint of Volume V. Front board of Volume VII is held by cords only and may detach with further handling. Crack to the head of the front joint of Volume XI. Rear hinge of Volume XVI is weak, with a crack to the head of the front joint. Prior owner's ink annotations to the verso of the front free endpaper and title page of Volume I. Volume XV, with prior owners ink annotation to the recto to the front free endpaper, and prior owner's name to the verso to the front free endpaper, 'Barbara Cockayne Medlycott'. Bookplate to the front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age-toned and generally clean with the odd spot.The occasional neat annotation to the margins. Very Good.
